The English translation for Tair Carn Isaf is "Lower Three Cairns", whilst Tair Carn Uchaf translates as "Higher Three Cairns". There is an Ordnance Survey triangulation pillar between the first two Cairns, bearing a metal plaque with the following words: "TAIR CARN" ADOPTED BY AMMANFORD WALKING CLUB 7 - 3 - 1994

Description. The monument comprises the remains of four much disturbed grit stone rubble cairns which probably date to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC) and which are situated towards the south west end of the hogback summit of Tair Carn Isaf. The easternmost cairn measures c 12m in diameter and is up to 1.2m high.

Fortunately Tair Carn Uchaf remained clear and we were rewarded with great views of its three huge cairns. Built from grit stone rubble they date back to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC) with the largest measuring almost eighteen metres in diameter. Pausing before them was pretty awe inspiring given their age and I couldn't help but wonder.

Our ancestors who lived in the Bronze Age 4000 years ago cremated their dead and interred them in the ground and a cairn was constructed over the top or cists (stone boxes) were inserted into the cairn.
