If anybody is interested, the Yongnuo YN-E3-RT (version 1) works OK with the EOS R - except the AF assist ofcourse. Isn't the YN-E3_RT radio transmission only, like Canon's ST-E3-RT? That won't work with the OP's optical ETTL 580EX II. True. I stated that just in case anybody reading this thread was wondering about other flash triggers on the R.

Canon has announced a new Version 2 of their ST-E3-RT trigger for controlling Canon speedlights off-camera. If you were hoping for some massive upgrade, though, you're in for a little disappointment.
